According to Professor Tischendorf's Notes, Verses 1-11 are spurious. Nevertheless very many translations contain these verses. According to the law when people were caught in adultery they were to be put to death by stoning (Lev. 20:10). However, for the death penalty, it must be established by two or three witnesses (Deut.17:6; 19:15). The LORD added responsibility to the witnesses in that they were to be the ones who cast the first stones. (Deut. 17:7 "The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people.") What our Lord did here is remarkable indeed. Not only did he, by his remark to the witnesses "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone," cause all to leave her alone, but his grasp of the law insured that He was not in a position to condemn her either. Since Jesus did not witness the act and the law required the witnesses to be the first to take action to put her to death and afterward all the people, Jesus, therefore was not in a position to take action against her. |
| 2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. |

It is interesting to note that under the Law, both the man and the woman were to be put to death. Since the scribes and Pharisees claimed she was caught "in the very act," it would appear that they themselves were in violation of the Law because they did not bring the man also. Lev. 20:10 |

Where are those thine accusers – Jesus here makes reference to the Law (Deut. 17:6) that no one could be put to death except by the mouth of two or three witnesses. |

Neither do I condemn thee – Jesus again is referring to the same part of the Law (Deut. 17:7) which declares that the witnesses must be the first to take physical action against those to be put to death, and afterward the rest of the people. Since the witnesses had left, and they had to cast the first stones, it would have been a violation of the Law for Jesus (or anyone else) to take action to put her to death. |

| 52 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. |

| 53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself? |

| 54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:

| 55 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.

| 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.

| 57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? |

| 58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

| 59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple. |
